N95 Respirators: Fit-testing, Resources, and Suppliers

If your organization uses N95 respirators, staff will need to be fit-tested to use them safely. This means making sure the respirators have been tested to ensure a full seal before they are used so that the staff using them are properly protected. Staff should be fit-tested annually on the make, model, and size of respirator that they will be provided with at work. They should also be trained on your respiratory protection program including any limitations posed by the respirator.

We know that increasing numbers of our members are looking to fit-test their staff. You may wish to consider doing so based on their determination of a point of care risk assessment, or as part of future resilience planning to ensure the organization is prepared for outbreaks of airborne disease, or other hazards. Below are some resources which may help with providing fit-testing. This includes virtual ‘train the tester’ options and fit-test kits to build in-house capacity, as well as third-party organizations who can provide this service. These suppliers have not been vetted and we recommend conducting your own due diligence on the type of testing and experience these suppliers can provide.

We have also included a list of suppliers of N95 (or equivalent) respirators at the bottom of the page along with some guidance on what to look for when purchasing respirators for use in your workplace.

In some circumstances, SafeCare BC may be able to advise members on which option is most suitable. We may also be able to connect members with local or peer fit-testing support if all other avenues have been exhausted. For additional member support on this, please contact info@safecarebc.ca .

N95 (or equivalent) Respirators

WorkSafeBC accepts NIOSH and CSA certification requirements for respirators as a standard acceptable to WorkSafeBC under section 8.33(2) of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. You can check to see if your respirator has been certified by NIOSH by entering the approval number, which can be found on the respirator, in the NIOSH database.   Respirators that have received certification approval from CSA are listed in the CSA Group Product Listing webpage. NIOSH and CSA approved respirators are deemed acceptable to WorkSafeBC, however, there are situations where WorkSafeBC accepts respirators from other jurisdictions.  See WorkSafeBC Guidelines section 8.33(2) for further details.

There can be some risks associated with procuring acceptable masks, respirators and equivalents during a supply shortage. For example:

  • KN95 type respirators and other respirators with ear loop designs (as opposed to around-the-head elastic) can make it more difficult to get an effective seal.
  • Valves are featured on some N95 respirators.  These masks protect the wearer but not the resident, client or patient.  For this reason they are more commonly used in construction or other dusty environments and not healthcare.

Mask vs. Respirator Infographic

Surgical masks and respirators are different types of personal protective equipment. Healthcare workers wear surgical masks as part of their personal protective equipment; however, these are not respirators and are not certified as such. The decision to wear a mask versus a respirator should be based on a risk assessment of the specific work environment.

Respirator Protection Program and Policy Templates

The following respirator protection template resources were developed by
SafeCare BC, with input from its Technical Advisory committee, which is comprised of union, WorkSafeBC, and employer representatives.
Respiratory Protection Program Template
Use this template to customize your respirator protection program.

Qualitative Fit Tester Guide

This step-by-step guide can be used as a reference tool for fit testers. The instructions will help ensure that nothing is missed during the fit test procedure.

What to Expect at Your Fit Test

This handout can be given to workers in advance of their fit test. It provides information about what they should expect and how they can prepare.

Fit Tester FAQs

This document contains answers to the most common questions that new fit testers have.

Respiratory Protection Policy Template

Use this template to customize your policies and procedures around a respiratory protection program.

These templates can be used by qualified fit testers to meet the requirements of a respirator protection program.

Record Sheet

The record sheet should be completed by the fit tester to show an overview of all the fit test that they complete in a day. It summarizes the results of the fit testing forms.

fit testing form records specific details of an individual worker’s fit test. It should accompany the record sheet and be stored by the employer should the information be required later.

Pocket Certificate

pocket certificate should be issued to the worker after their fit test. It verifies that they have been successfully fit tested, which mask they should wear, and when they will need to be fit tested again.
