Having Difficult Conversations Workshop

Difficult conversations are bound to come up in the workplace, whether it is with a resident, client, or team member. It is important to have the necessary skills to set you up for success no matter who you are having a conversation with! This workshop will help you have conversations with respect and curiosity that make others feel heard, supported, and valued by using the fundamentals of Motivational Interviewing.

Situations where this may be helpful:

  • Supporting someone who is hesitant to get a vaccine
  • Supporting a resident or client pursue a new treatment
  • Helping a team member take responsibility for their actions

By completing this full-day workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the impact of body language in a conversation
  • Describe the Spirit of MI and discuss ways to express it
  • Discuss three styles for helping interactions: directing, guiding, and following
  • Discuss ways to be present in an interaction
  • Discuss the role of listening in communication
  • Demonstrate fundamental Motivational Interviewing skills
  • Demonstrate how to support someone make an informed decision
  • Discuss how new skills and knowledge will apply to practice
