Gotcha Safety Awards

The Gotcha Safety Awards is a campaign to ‘catch’ colleagues in the act of performing an act or task safely.

The aim is to take a photo of a staff member following a safe work practice (SWP) and submit it to the Health and Safety Committee. For each photo submitted the photographer will receive a point for their department and the person photographed will also receive a point for their department. The photos will be displayed on the notice boards along with a monthly update of the scorecard.

Passport for Safety – Canadian Edition Eh?

To encourage and improve both workplace safety education and online learning compliance, Eden Gardens is introducing the “Passport for Safety – Canadian Edition Eh?”. Each staff member will have their own “passport” and can collect stamps for completing online learning modules, demonstrating workplace safety knowledge, or scavenger hunts to find safety equipment.

Eden Gardens is putting the focus on Canadian flag colours, with the focus on Code Red and Code White, to add a patriotic element to our Passport for Safety. Eden Gardens intends to continue with the Passport for Safety, focusing on different international code colours as the program progresses.

Sailing for Safety

Sailing for Safety is a fun and simple way to track education process. Using a drawn map and paper sailboats, staff “sail” around Vancouver Island completing education modules for different ports as they go. Every staff member is encouraged to participate by colouring a sailboat, naming it and doing the education modules and experiences. The experiences are in-house education such as back care and lifting. Staff receive nautical miles on completion of the education modules, inhouse attendance is worth more miles.

The program aims to increase participation in education and decrease work-related injuries to staff.

Ten Minutes to Relaxation

Our Employee-created program “Ten Minutes to Relaxation” was the dream of one of our HCWs. Flordeliza wanted a program for staff that featured Exercise to keep fit and work safely with the residents and staff, an academic program, and a community-supportive idea to welcome all without judgement or bullying.
It turned out to be a very successful program in turning “Burnout ” into joy! Each participant engages in a 5-minute Tai Chi warmup then on to 4 minutes masse. We do this Kongo style to prime up the “Happy Hormones”. The participants also include some of our residents. Our Academic and personal development sections are featured each week in a workbook.

Safety Flash Cards

Create customized and color-coded flash cards to streamline the education process for safety procedures in the home! Noticed the inefficient outcomes that we’ve had for each of our fire drills and discovered the main reason for this was that the staff did not know what to do. Staff are often so busy with their existing workload that it can be tiresome and unappealing to use their spare time to refresh or educate themselves on their contribution when it comes to safety procedures.
The flash cards will be color-coded to each role (care aides, nurses, maintenance, housekeepers, etc.) to avoid confusion. Each card will outline key moments and tasks specific to each role and will use short, concise language for quick and efficient learning.

NexsysADC Secure Dispensing Cabinet

Automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) have been available for a couple decades, but Capsa Healthcare’s NexsysADC is different; it was designed for long-term care. Practical in size, price range, and scope. NexsysADC is accessible for even small volume homes (or behavioral health and hospice too) — not just large hospitals. Compact cabinet that controls the onsite storage and distribution of medications (especially narcotics) and high-value supplies. At all times, pharmacies stocking medications and nursing managers controlling the removal of medications know what doses are inside each NexsysADC cabinet, which nurse is accessing them, and what medication dose is getting to which patient. Each transaction is visible and trackable via cloud connection.

Safety-It’s all in the Details!

We are creating safety posters for each department. These posters will have many safety fails in them, to be spotted by our staff. Each department will prepare their space with some safety issues that are frequently spotted in their areas. Staff will submit their entries for best poster, and point out the safety fails.
