The Fears and Solutions initiative is about starting a dialogue. Using a blank poster to fill out, staff and students are asked two questions: “what are you afraid of?” and “what are you going to about it?” By writing their answers to each of the questions on a poster, staff work together to come up with solutions to common fears. A proactive, welcoming environment is formed.

How does your idea improve workplace health and safety?
Reducing the stress on new workers by dealing with issues before they have a chance to manifest once they are working. With less stress and agitation, the workers come to work feeling confident. They can be more attentive and productive in their work. Feeling scared about something can cause inattention or absenteeism which ultimately will cause stressors at work. These stressors could affect all the staff in a non-productive way and cause resentment. Relaxed and attentive staff makes for a safer working environment.
How did you implement this idea?
The project was first done with care aide students as a way to get them to open up about their fears before they are actually working in the field. It helps us to understand what scares them about working as care aides and it also gives us Ideas on how to help them through those fears and possibly reduce their fear.
What has been the impact on workplace health and safety?
Both new workers and ones who have been working for many years feel better about themselves and each other. They will be able to communicate if they are feeling uncomfortable about situations that could arise.
By being able to voice their fears, they can overcome it and be able to be more productive, happier and attentive in their jobs. Which ultimately makes for a happier and safer workplace.
What was the initial set up cost?
Cost of a poster board to write on. Can also use a white board if available.
