June 13, 2023 | Overexertion

Innovation Idea Details

Organization:
MIP INC

Innovation Idea:
The Swift Slider is a friction reducing device to assist with patient/resident repositioning, boosting and turning in bed.
Consists of 1 or 2 parts (depending on how heavy/light and mobile/immobile patients are):
1. The Swift positioning sheet
2. The Ultraslide Bottom sheet

A ladder is no longer required to change out curtains, the system allows seemless curtain removal for washing in just 1-2 min vs the historic 15-30 min 2 person job; As a result, fewer injuries and better compliance with infection control protocol.

What workplace hazard does this idea address?
Overexertion

How does your idea improve workplace health and safety?
Swift is an in-situ repositioning solution that was created with an in-field PT and RN to reduce musculoskeletal injuries for care providers relating to positioning, boosting and turning of care recipients in bed. This solution reduces time required to safely handle a patient (both for staff and patient) given that the tool remains under the patient at all times and requires no additional equipment to use, thereby increasing compliance and use.

the placement of the Swift covers the heaviest portions of the body whereas with a pad, the shoulders will be dragged on the linen.

The device is a Class 1 Health Canada Device – it reduces friction forces making patient positioning easier with less effort.

How did you implement this idea?
The positioning sheets stay tucked into the bed on top of the bottom sheet improving compliance of use.

What has been the impact on workplace health and safety?
Swift is an integral part of any safe patient handling program that will help reduce staff injuries related to repositioning.

Use of the SWIFT supports the recommendations noted in the NGC skin safety plan and the turning protocols outlined in the referenced hospital protocols. The ease of use in training staff on use of the SWIFT not only facilitates the correct use of the SWIFT by staff, but further supports the mandate of the ANA Handle with Care Campaign® to prevent back and other musculoskeletal injuries
