Innovation Idea Details

Chilliwack Society for Community Living

Innovation Idea:
Chilliwack Society for Community Living has enrolled in the WorkSafeBC Certificate of Recognition (COR) initiative that encourages an occupational health and safety management system that goes beyond the current legal requirements. When awarded, an incentive payment is made. Half of the rebate is allotted our Wellness Committee.

How does your idea improve workplace health and safety?
Wellness initiatives and events have become a mainstay in the cultural fabric of CSCL and our employees are healthier and better off because of it. Examples include; a Salad Club for staff, Fun Runs, a “Run-for Mom” team, a Hiking Club, Wellness “flash” Mobs, Zumba classes, facilitating Leisure passes at the local recreation centre, a Biggest Loser contest, and handing out Wellness swag and info to create “wellness awareness”. Creating an on-site wellness program is important because the majority of an employee’s time is spent at the workplace.

How did you implement this idea?
By achieving a certificate of recognition for each of the 7 years, an incentive payment (calculated using CSCL’s assessable payroll and the base rate for our classification unit) is received every year. CSCL has allotted half of this rebate to our Wellness Committee – upwards to $10,000/year. The CSCL Wellness Committee formally meets on a quarterly basis with the approved mandate of “promoting the health and wellness of CSCL staff.”

What has been the impact on workplace health and safety?
This intentionality to ensuring our employees are healthy and health-conscious has directly lead to a decrease in our reportable injures and accidents. CSCL was injury-accident free for the month of February and December in 2017 and the total Number of Injuries and the Injury Rate was significantly decreased compared to previous year’s data – CSCL’s Injury Rate has dropped by 6%; the total count of Injuries dropped a whopping 28 reportable incidents and the Serious Injury Rate dropped 4% despite facing continual organizational growth and bringing on new employees.
