Job Opening: Occupational Health and Safety Consultant

Overview:

The Occupational Health and Safety Consultant will act as the primary resource in providing customized occupational health and safety support to long-term care and home care and support organizations by providing strategic safety advice to enhance their occupational health and safety program and compliance with provincial regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the SafeCare BC mandate by working with long term and home care and support organizations to facilitate the development, maintenance, and implementation of health and safety related activities
  • Conduct organization / site visits and audits
  • Conduct training on an as-needed basis
  • Provide customized gap analyses for employer health and safety programs to identify areas for improvement
  • Assess and evaluate work procedures and environments to identify potential hazards and provide recommendations to eliminate them or ensure that adequate controls are in place
  • Support accident investigation processes and provide recommendations to address incident root causes where necessary
  • Recommend appropriate procedures and equipment for safety and compliance with relevant laws and regulations
  • Support claims management processes and provide recommendations to improve recovery and return to work outcomes
  • Provide regular updates to the SafeCare BC Director of Workplace Health and Safety Programs, both written and oral
  • Positively represent SafeCare BC
  • Other duties as requested by SafeCare BC Director of Workplace Health and Safety Programs or senior leadership staff

Qualifications:

  • Completion of an occupational health and safety designation or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in occupational health and safety
  • Experience working in healthcare or the continuing care sector
  • Facilitation experience and knowledge of adult-learning principles
  • Excellent working knowledge of provincial Health and Safety Regulations and a willingness to keep up with new developments
  • Drivers licence and access to a reliable vehicle to allow for regular travel throughout the province
  • The ability to coach and support individuals and organizations in adopting and implementing leading occupational health and safety practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Desire and ability to work independently
  • Experience with Certificate-of-Recognition is an asset
